Left Handed People Rock!
If you’re a ‘Lefty’, you will appreciate some of the examples I will be using later in this post. You’ve probably experienced similar situations yourself.
If you’re a ‘Righty’, please be prepared to learn about what it is like being a ‘Lefty’ in this ‘Righty’ world. Maybe you have been guilty of making fun of a left handed person. We who exist in the ‘Lefty’ world learn to deal with some of the ridiculousness that exists in your world.
When I was a small child, first learning how to eat with utensils and write, my natural hand was the left one. My dad had a fit. He harped on the issue about not wanting me to be left handed to the point of really irritating my mom. She finally told him ‘to leave her alone and let her use the hand she feels most comfortable with!’ Thanks mom!
So my journey of being a ‘Lefty’ began. When I was about 7 years old, I asked for an acoustic guitar for Christmas. My parents seemed excited that I wanted to learn how to play a musical instrument. So, for Christmas, I received a right handed guitar! I struggled trying to get my right hand to do what I wanted it to do. It felt so awkward. I really didn’t understand what the problem was until many years later. With practice, I was able to overcome a lot of the awkwardness of playing a right handed guitar.
For me and probably many other members of the ‘Lefty’ empire, being left handed has been both a curse and a blessing.
What is Ambidextrous?
The blessing: I learned to adapt and become ambidextrous, meaning I can use both hands for certain tasks. I found that if I initially learn something doing it right handed, I will do it right handed and the same rule goes for my left hand.
The curse: being made fun of, even in adulthood. I am a ‘Lefty’ all the way when it comes to most tasks, writing especially. I hit right handed when it comes to golf and baseball.
I was unfortunate enough to have a teacher who failed to consider her young left handed students. She placed the paper down on the table, slanted in the same direction for everyone. As a result, I have the typical ‘funny’ way of writing. However, in doing so, my hand writing looks as if a right handed person wrote it. I find that interesting.
When I was a junior in high school, I was sitting in class when the girl next to me saw me writing and began saying ‘You’re the Devil!’ She continued to repeat that statement until our left handed teacher heard her and proceeded to ‘set her straight’ on the topic of the Devil and left handed people. It was quite refreshing to see the instigator’s facial expression of terror when the teacher spoke. I still enjoy that memory to this day.
Advice for the ‘Righty’ world; Be careful when making fun of a left handed person. You never who else is left handed!! Ha! Ha!
Advice for the ‘Righty’ world; Please let your left handed friends and family members sit on an end seat at the table so they don’t bump elbows with a “Righty’. We love an end seat!!
Some cultures don’t allow people to use their left hand for anything beyond wiping their backside after using the toilet. So glad I come from a different culture! No offense, of course!
I’m a proud parent of an ambidextrous boy. I’m so thrilled he can use both hands to perform different tasks. I believe that is a huge advantage to us in the ‘Lefty’ world. Most of the right handed people I know are helpless with their left hand. Some times I get to laugh at them!
I’m sure there are a lot of humorous left handed stories out there. We are the only ones in our ‘right’ mind, isn’t that the phrase? Be proud to be a lefty!
For parents of left handed children: Please support your child. Sometimes it’s not easy being left handed. Some people can be very cruel. Your support will go a long way in helping improve their confidence and self esteem!
