Reasons You Are Losing eMail Subscribers
The reasons you are losing email subscribers aren’t hard to discern. I have signed up for numerous email lists over the years. I am going to share the reasons I unsubscribe to email lists. If you are guilty of any of these, you might want to re-think your email marketing strategy.
1. Sending Out Too Many Emails
The primary reason I unsubscribe to an email list is because I am receiving too many emails; two sometimes three per day from the same person or company. Over promotion is a huge turn off.
There are differing opinions as to how many emails you should send to your subscribers on a weekly basis so you have to make the decision on your frequency. I do recommended that you avoid sending emails out daily unless you inform your subscribers up front. If your opt-in list is for daily tips, then they will expect a daily email. The accepted frequency is usually 2-3 emails per week.
2. Selling Your Email List (Don’t Do It)
One of the requirements by the FTC is for a website owner to provide an email policy. In that email policy you are required to state what you will do with the information a subscriber provides when subscribing to your list.
So, if you state in the email policy that you will not share or sell the emails, you need avoid any temptation to sell your email list for a profit. If a subscriber can prove that you violated your email policy, they can sue you. Yes, this goes well beyond just losing subscribers, but I felt the need to include this because I know it occurs.
Never purchase an email list either. You don’t what you are getting and what their interest are. Getting organic subscribers is the best way to build your list. Watch this video to learn about four important reason to never buy an email list.
3. Unrelated Content
People subscribe to email lists for a number of different reasons. If the content you provide in the emails isn’t what your subscribing expected, they may decide to unsubscribe. If your list promises, for example tips on making money, but you are sending out products to promote that will only make you money, your subscribers will tire of that quickly.
Conclusion
Building an email list is very important for any business. It should used carefully and wisely. People do not want to be spammed with emails so make sure your content will be useful and information your subscriber will look forward to receiving. Avoid over promoting products, and do not sell your email list.
Make sure your emails contain an unsubscribe option. Don’t hide it or make it difficult for the recipient to find.
